Using FPS for Long-term Sustainable Harvest Planning

This workshop will emphasize harvest scheduling and long-term silvicultural planning. Each participant will come away with a state-of-the-art understanding for developing and implementing long-term forest management operational plans.

Do you know the sustainable capacity of your working forest? Have you provided your senior management with viable silvicultural options to meet your organizational goals? Can you explain these planning alternatives with confidence to your manager, owner, board or council?

Emphasis includes importance of harvest scheduling integration with inventory and silvicultural methods, alternative silvicultural regimes, site productivity, regeneration, operating costs, revenue and discounted cash flows. Detailed examples will identify impacts of stand versus forest-wide optimization strategies. If you own, manage or are concerned about inventory, GIS linkages, silviculture and harvest planning for a forested land base then this workshop is for you.

The objective of this workshop is to understand and apply a stand-based growth and silviculture modeling approach for all forest-wide silviculture and planning analyses. Each participant will be provided a computer, forest database, software and documentation with which we will develop each step and component over this two-day workshop. The combined workshop documentation and inventory database developed during this workshop will provide each participant with the tools and insight to carry out similar analyses upon returning to your own office. This workshop is updated based on current feedback from Technical Support questions.

Some planning models are based on Linear Programming solutions, such as Remsoft’s Woodstock. Some planning models are based on Binary Search algorithms, such as FBRI’s FPS. Do you understand the differences in results when applying these alternative models? Do you know what assumptions are behind the choice of a planning model? Then this workshop is essential for you.
