Integrating Lidar Canopy Height Models with Satellite-Assisted Inventory Methods: A Comparison of Inventory Estimates

Forest management inventory estimates were derived from satellite and lidar data and then compared with estimates from field-based sampling.  When satellite and lidar data were combined, the error is reduced and total volume estimates were comparable with those obtained from a field-based sample. These methods are best suited for managers who want to continuing using their existing inventory software, yet need a complete inventory in 1 – 2 years and want to avoid the large cost for an intensive census-level lidar inventory.
